Portraiture Series Statement
I have concentrated on portraiture my entire artistic life, from the early charcoal drawings I exhibited at The Drawing Center, NYC, in 1981, through ten years of exclusively working with the directness of pastels to create large-scale installations of people who have not been integrated into “mainstream” society. Most recently, my paintings have attempted to convey the vitality and distinctiveness of 21st-century contemporary culture, rampant with selfies and iPhone photographs, capturing ineffable moments in our lives.
My working process does not aim to replicate the source photographs; rather, it gazes intently at the shapes and forms of the face, like pieces of a puzzle that I must connect to build a whole person—akin to a magician probing mysterious landscapes abundant with hills, valleys, crevices, sunlight peeking through, and deep shadows the color of midnight blue.
The sensuality and radiant beauty of youth and ethnic diversity are depicted in my choice of subjects as well as the ravages of time, which are imprinted on our being. This is the intimate breath I wish to capture in my art. -
